A 2007 study by the University of California, San Francisco, published in the Journal of the American Academy of Neurology, found that “there was virtually no exposure to harmful combustion products using the vaporizing device”. http://Abrams DI, Vizoso HP, Shade SB, Jay C, Kelly ME, Benowitz NL (November 2007). “Vaporization as a smokeless cannabis delivery system: a pilot study” (PDF). Vaporization has been a common term in the marijuana world for the last two decades or more. The word “vape” and related terms markedly increased in 2014, supporting the conclusion that “vaping” has gone mainstream. Oxford traces the earliest use of the word to a 1983 article about nicotine vapor, however, the term “vape pen” is clearly a marijuana product, as opposed to an “e-cig”, the term used for vaporizing nicotine. Vaporizing marijuana was first written about by Dr. Lunglife in several articles showing how to build a whip-style vaporizer published in 1989 editions of High Times.
